Advice
Knightsbridge sits on the boundary between two councils, and their bulky waste rules are not the same. We explain how to work out who collects for your building and why it changes what you can book.
Quick answers
If you are searching for which council covers knightsbridge, this guide is written around Knightsbridge, SW1X, London and focuses on the access, timing, and pricing details that usually decide whether a job is simple or awkward.
Knightsbridge is unusual because the SW1X postcode area is shared between two local authorities. Depending on which side of the boundary your address falls, your bulky waste and garden waste arrangements are handled by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea or by Westminster City Council.
That matters because the two councils run their bulky collection services differently, with different item limits, different charges and different conditions. Before you book anything, it is worth confirming which authority actually collects from your building.
The simplest check is to enter your full address on the government council finder, or look up your council tax bill, which names the authority directly. If your building has a concierge or managing agent, they will usually know which council collects from the communal stores as well.
If you are still unsure, both councils publish their bulky waste pages in detail, and you can call them. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea lists its bulky waste line on 020 7361 3001.
Under its "Too Big for the Bin" service, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea collects up to ten bulky items for a single non-refundable charge of 44 pounds, and the collection is free if you receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support.
RBKC collects most furniture and household items, including televisions and stereos, washing machines, sofas, tables and chairs, and mattresses. Collections run Monday to Saturday, 7am to 3pm, and are closed on Sundays and bank holidays. Items must be left outside at ground or basement level and presented by 7am.
Where an address falls under Westminster City Council, bulky waste collection costs 36 pounds for up to six items, with each additional item charged at 6.40 pounds, and the council aims to complete the collection within three working days. It is free if you receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, limited to one collection of up to six items every 90 days.
Westminster crews will only remove items that two people can lift safely, and items are left in front gardens, communal reception areas or communal bin stores. Assisted internal collections are available for residents who are physically unable to leave items outside.
Because we work across both sides of the boundary, the first thing we confirm for a Knightsbridge job is who your authority is. That tells us whether the council route is realistic for your items or whether a private collection is the cleaner fit, particularly where access, volume or timing rules out the council service.
If you would rather not navigate the two systems at all, we can simply take the items away ourselves, and we will always tell you honestly when the council option would suit you better.
Frequently asked questions
